Forklifts – Frequently Asked Questions
Forklift trucks and their usage require a lot of care and attention as they can be very hazardous if not used correctly. In order to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), there is a variety of rules and regulations that must be adhered to if maximum safety is to be ensured.
What certification do I need?
In order to operate a forklift, employees must have received ‘adequate information, instruction and training’ – there is no actual formal law or qualification required for their operation. The two relevant qualifications are given by the Accrediting Body Association (ABA):
RTITB
Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSSR)
Construction Industry Training Board (CITB)
National Plant Operators Registration Scheme Ltd (NPORS)
Lantra Award
Association of Industrial Truck Trainers (AITT)
How long am I certified for?
Employers are required to prove they have provided refresher courses for their drivers at regular intervals, to ensure they comply with health and safety law. The Health and Safety Commission recommends that the period between refresher courses lasts no longer than three years.
What equipment can I use once accredited?
Accreditation falls into three categories: B1, B2 and B3. B1 accreditation allows for the use of machines up to 5,000kgs, B2 means you can operate machines from 5,000kgs to 15,000kgs, and B3 means anything over 15,000kgs falls under your remit. It is advised, however, that the training provided by employers is specific to the machine or machines that the employee will be operating, as well as training for any attachments that the machine will use.
Are forklifts road legal?
Again, there is no set legal precedent for this, but legislation does state that the machines need to be used in the ‘immediate vicinity’ of their premises, which means anywhere within 1,000 feet of the work property. The forklift does need to be registered with the DVLA as a ‘works vehicle’, and if any road use is to be undertaken, insurance companies must be informed.
Are there medical standards required?
There are no legal medical requirements for forklift drivers, but if any drivers have medical conditions that could affect their ability to operate a forklift safely, they should consult the advice of their GP.
